Remarks
This work numbers among a group of small watercolor paintings (see Related Works on Paper) related to a canvas of the period, Antigone, the title of which refers to the daughter of Oedipus described in Greek mythology and the titular protagonist of Sophocles’s tragedy (fig. 1). In this work, Rothko placed the figure with the jutting elbow at the left edge of the figural frieze, a mirror image of the related watercolors and the canvas.
